Morton Fink

2013 Record: (5-3-1-0)
2013 Earnings: $622,593
2013 Win %: 60% In-The-Money %: 80%

  • Born: Dec. 3, 1929, in Chicago
  • Residence: Northbrook, Ill.
  • Family: wife Elaine; a daughter and two sons
  • Education: graduated from Roosevelt University with a degree in business administration.
  • Morton Fink has owned racehorses for nearly 40 years, but has enjoyed his greatest success over the last few years with Successful Dan and Wise Dan. The geldings are both sons of Lisa Danielle, a mare he named for his granddaughter and kept primarily for sentimental reasons when her racing career concluded.
  • Just after Wise Dan’s victory in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (Can-G1) on Sept. 16, Fink said he would consider both the Breeders’ Cup Mile and the Breeders’ Cup Classic for his stable star. "After 40 years of trying (to breed such a specimen), it's an incredible feeling,” he said. "I think he is good on anything as he's proved but I think he is a little better on the grass. But you can't turn down a Classic. There are no superstars, I don't think, around this year."
  • Overall, Wise Dan has won three of four starts in 2012, including a five-length victory in the $500,000 Fourstardave (G2) at Saratoga ... His only loss came in the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) when second to Ron the Greek.
  • Successful Dan, who set a track record of 1:41.04 for 1-1/16 when winning the  2012 Alysheba Stakes (G2) at Churchill May 4, suffered a strained distal sesamoidean ligament in his left foreleg while preparing for the Whitney Handicap (G1) and was to undergo stem cell treatment ... It was the third significant injury for the gelding, but Fink and trainer Charles Lopresti hope to return him to racing.
  • Fink attributes much of Wise Dan’s and Successful Dan’s accomplishments to trainer Charlie Lopresti’s ability to give horses personal attention because he has stable of less than 30 horses.
  • Fink also campaigned Guided Tour, a two-time starter in the Breeders’ Cup Classic who banked nearly $2-million, trained by Niall O'Callaghan.
  • Although his mother was the first to introduce him to the track when he was young, Fink first got involved in Thoroughbred ownership in the early 1970's when he and friends pooled their money to claim a horsefor $4,000 that Fink said never won. Undaunted, Fink formed another partnership with Roy Gottlieb a few years later and called the stable Carelaine Farm, a combination of their wives’ names. Carelaine Farm disbanded in 1993 after a successful run that included breeding dual classic-placed Producer, a Group 1 winner in Europe whom he sold in foal to Northern Dancer in 1983 for $5.25 million. Also bred and raced Annoconnor, a mare who earned $1-million on the track and was named to honor a deceased employee.
  • Fink’s primary business was owning a chain of movie theaters he inherited from his father, which he sold to a national chain.
